It sounds like a nightmare: you’ve spent a lot of time manually going through and filling out a spreadsheet. Too important to risk an AI hallucination, you’ve manually input and triple-checked every data point. It’s perfect.
Except the data needs to be flipped. Your x-axis should be where your y-axis is, and vice versa. Fortunately, both Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets have an easy fix: transpose.
How to Transpose Your Spreadsheet Data
Using Microsoft Excel
- First, select the cell where you want to paste the transposed table.
- In this cell, type =TRANSPOSE.
- Select your entire dataset and press Enter.
Unfortunately, this method removes any formatting you’ve added. To keep your formatting, you need to follow a different process:
- Select your entire dataset and copy it using Ctrl + C.
- Next, select the cell where you want to paste the transposed table.
- In the Home ribbon, find Paste, then use the arrow next to it to open the menu.
- Within that menu, click Transpose.
There is also a keyboard shortcut version of the process:
- Select your entire dataset using Ctrl + A.
- Copy your data using Ctrl + C.
- Select the cell where you want to paste the transposed table.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + V + E to open the Paste Special window.
- Make sure All and Transpose are selected, and click Okay.
Using Google Sheets
- Select the data you want to transpose.
- With the data still highlighted, select the cell where you want to transpose it.
- Type =TRANSPOSE and confirm that your highlighted range is added.
- Press Enter to finish transposing your data.
Similarly, Google Sheets features a shortcut-enabled process, too:
- Select your entire dataset using Ctrl + A.
- Copy your data using Ctrl + C.
- Select the cell where you want to paste the transposed table.
- Navigate to Edit and select Paste Special.
- Select Paste transposed.
