When an employee is trying to hit a tight 5 p.m. deadline, they will take the path of absolute least resistance. Most of the time, that path leads straight to clicking "Save to Desktop." Navigating three layers of network folders or waiting two seconds for a cloud share to load feels like an unnecessary hurdle when the clock is ticking.

It seems harmless enough on the surface. But saving company files locally creates a massive, expensive blind spot for your business.

When files take five minutes to download or your cloud software hangs while a customer is on the phone, the default reaction is usually to call your internet provider and complain. Most of the time, the internet provider is not the problem. The $60 consumer router sitting under someone's desk is.

Off-the-shelf routers and unmanaged switches from a big-box store are engineered for light home setups, like streaming a movie or checking email on a tablet. They are simply not built to process heavy commercial workloads, handle high connection volumes, or manage constant data transfers.

One of my most frustrating, yet still understandable, conversations I have with the business owners I work with is regarding the restrictions they should place on their team members—namely, that they should put these restrictions in place at all.

Let’s talk about why it is a bad, bad idea to give every single person on your team full admin permissions on your network.

A secure data backup feels like a safety net, but storing files is only half the equation. If restoring your system takes days or weeks during an operational outage, the financial damage to your business can certainly remain severe.
